Doug Minshell is an avid outdoorsman whose love of nature and wildlife began at an early age. Growing up in the rural hills of Valley Center, CA just north of San Diego, Doug spent countless hours roaming the hills and valleys exploring nature and hunting. From these experiences, Doug learned many important skills that he’s applied to photography in the field. Hunting taught Doug to appreciate and understand wildlife and the patience to wait for the perfect shot. No longer a hunter, Doug now prefers to capture animals and nature through the lens of a camera, hence the name 12 Gauge Photography.

Doug first became interested in photography at age 16 when he bought a Pentax K1000 and a couple zoom lenses. He experimented with all sorts of different shots, but really enjoyed sports action shots. He even dreamed of one day becoming a photographer for Sports Illustrated. Somewhere along the way, that dream dimmed and he became a software engineer instead, but the love of nature and interest in photography never went away.

With renewed enthusiasm, Doug started getting serious about nature photography around 2002. Combining that with a love of travel, Doug captures the beauty of landscapes and wildlife from San Diego to Alaska to the Arctic Circle and beyond. He now specializes in digital photography and strives to capture nature in its many resplendent and beautiful forms.

Doug’s award-winning work has been sold at non-profit fundraising events in the San Diego area and won 3rd place in the 2009 Best of Nature Photography show at the Ordover Gallery in the San Diego Natural History Museum with his image titled "Green Sea Turtle". Even more recently, Doug's photo titled "Just Chatting" won 2nd place in the Desert Animal category of the Anza-Borrego Foundation's 2011 Anza-Borrego Desert Photo Contest.

Doug started 12 Gauge Photography in 2005 as a way to share his beautiful images with others. “Nature is so diverse and so beautiful…I love being able to share that with others through my photos,” said Doug. Doug’s beautiful images can be purchased from this web site as high quality archival prints and note cards. Calendars are also available.
